Backpacking Southeast Asia 2026: Budget, Route & Planning Guide
Southeast Asia remains one of the best-value destinations on the planet. Low costs, incredible food, stunning landscapes and visa-on-arrival in most countries make it a natural first stop for new backpackers — and a perennial favourite for seasoned travellers.
The best backpacking route through Southeast Asia
The classic circuit works clockwise from Bangkok and can be done in 6 weeks to 6 months depending on pace. Here's the route most backpackers follow:
- Bangkok, Thailand — 3–4 days. Grand Palace, Chatuchak market, Khao San Road.
- Chiang Mai, Thailand — 3–5 days. Temples, cooking classes, day trip to Doi Inthanon.
- Hanoi, Vietnam — 2–3 days. Old Quarter, street food, Halong Bay day trip or overnight cruise.
- Hoi An, Vietnam — 3–4 days. Lantern town, tailor shops, An Bang Beach, My Son ruins.
- Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam — 2–3 days. War Remnants Museum, Mekong Delta, Cu Chi Tunnels.
- Siem Reap, Cambodia — 3–4 days. Angkor Wat sunrise, Bayon Temple, Pub Street.
- Bali, Indonesia — 5–10 days. Ubud, Seminyak, Uluwatu, Nusa Penida island day trip.
This route takes 5–7 weeks at a comfortable pace. You can extend with islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, Gili Islands), Myanmar, Laos or the Philippines as add-ons.

SIM cards & connectivity
Don't rely on a single SIM throughout your trip — regulations and networks vary by country. The best options in 2026:
- Local SIM cards: cheapest option. Buy on arrival at the airport. AIS (Thailand), Viettel (Vietnam) and Telkomsel (Indonesia) all offer solid tourist plans for €5–15/month.
- eSIM: no physical swap needed. Providers like Airalo, Holafly and Maya Mobile offer regional Southeast Asia eSIMs covering 5–10 countries from around €20–35 for 30 days. Ideal if your phone supports eSIM (most phones from 2021+).
- Pocket Wi-Fi: useful for groups but less convenient. Rent at airports or book in advance.
